Description:

The Metabolism of Cities Living Lab (MOC-LLAB) under the Center for Human Dynamics in the Mobile Age in the Department of Geography at San Diego State University (SDSU) in San Diego, California, USA is pleased to announce its participation in COP27, the upcoming annual United Nations Climate Change conference. The 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will take place in the coastal city of Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. This year’s Conference taking place under the Egyptian Presidency, has been widely viewed as an African COP with issues focusing on Loss and Damage, the impacts of climate change on communities and the financial support needed to adapt. We will be joining our civil society partners at the conference in a call for action to support those on the front lines of the climate crisis including across the African continent and on Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

"With the Metabolism of Cities Living Lab at SDSU and Hubzine Italia - Climate Youth program, we are providing capacity training and a platform for young activists on the front line of the climate crisis. The MOC-LLAB, the future platform of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in southern California and the Baja California Mexico region, will lead the way for vulnerable communities and maritime decarbonization.

We see the effects of the climate crisis all around us, from extreme heat and cold, wildfires, pollution, to flooding. It will take all of us to tackle the greatest challenge of our times and the Metabolism of Cities Living Lab at San Diego State University is determined to bring people together to do so by making sure no one is left behind."

-- Dr. Gabriela Fernandez, Metabolism of Cities Living Lab Founder and Director at San Diego State University in San Diego, California.

The Metabolism of Cities Living Lab at SDSU has been working to promote climate action and build momentum toward COP27 through education, art, data, story-telling, and capacity building including the new San Diego State University, ‘Beyond Borders: Digital Talks,’ and art mural inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and US-Mexico international border called Suscitatio Terminus "Awakening Border" in Latin. The art mural was developed by Gabi Zaballa (illustrator/story-teller), Karenina Zaballa (designer/story-teller), and Dr. Gabriela Fernandez (designer/story-teller) to highlight the challenges and opportunities found along our borders when localizing the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The art exhibition mural developed by the MOC-LLAB team will be showcased at the COP27 2022 in Egypt.

Dr. Domenico Vito, a climate leader from Milan, Italy is a member of the Metabolism of Cities Living Lab at COP27. In 2021 Dr. Vito was one of Metabolism of Cities Living Lab researchers that participated in COP26 in Glasgow, UK and continues to share his voice in calling for stronger climate ambition by all governments and civil society leaders
