SDG Pulse Toolkit

This initiative set out to research and develop an action toolkit that connects tangible everyday actions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and develop a set of achievable high-priority lifestyle areas where micro actions taken by individuals will contribute to sustainable macro changes in the economy and society at large.

Around the US more and more cities are signing up to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a framework for action. The Sustainable Development Solutions Network United States (SDSN USA) endeavors to build pathways for achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in the United States by mobilizing research, outreach, and collective action. According to the US Cities Sustainable Development Report, San Diego has identified five key SDG goals as the most relevant. These include: SDG 6, SDG 7, SDG 11, and SDG 12. The MOC-LLAB has teamed up with international professionals across the world from academia, UN organizations, local governments, representatives from target communities, NGOs, and businesses to develop sustainable actions.

In order to undertake these challenges and localize the 17 Global Goals the MOC-LLAB multidisciplinary global team have identified and classified the SDGs Toolkit in three areas. Firstly, to help cities calibrate, brainstorm, and monitor the SDGs through the SDSU SDGs Tracking Dashboard and implement programs for their achievement and progress towards the achievement of the SDGs. Secondly, the Toolkit is an effort to measure performance of cities, regions, and companies relative to the SDGs, advocate for sustainable development policies at the federal, state, and local level, by developing practical SDG Action applications and tools.

Thirdly, to advocate for Citizen Science tailored-based social, environmental, and economic campaign solutions that meet the needs of all members of society including under representative populations. Vulnerable populations include but are not limited to: people with disabilities, homeless and refugees, migrants, children, LGBTI+ community, elderly, pregnant women, indigenous Native American communities, and ethnic communities among others. At MOC-LLAB we aim to engage in networks of practice at multiple levels of governments and across sectors to include businesses, universities, policy makers, and civil society.

At MOC-LLAB the Global Goals are localized based on the following three phase criteria:

Phase I. SDG 6: Clean water and sanitation, SDG 7: Affordable and clean energy, SDG 9: Industry, innovation, and infrastructure, SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities, and SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production.

Phase II. SDG 1: No poverty, SDG 2: Zero hunger, SDG 3: Good health and well-being, SDG 4: Quality education, SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth, and SDG 10: Reduced inequalities.

Phase III. SDG 5: Gender equality, SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 14: Life below water, SDG 15: Life on land, and SDG 16: Peace, justice, and strong institutions.
